Denise Marrero

Visiting Scientist

I studied Biomedical Engineering at Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain) where I focused on the engineering perspective. Later, I pursued a MSc degree also in Biomedical Engineering at Twente University (Enschede, The Netherlands). There the emphasis was more on the biological side. Now, I am a PhD researcher at Instituto the Microelectronica de Barcelona where I am developing Organs-on-a-chip with integrated sensors to monitor the intestine microenvironment.

I followed Ben's publications and found them to be very interesting. Also, it matches the type of research I like to do. During an online conference, I heard him speaking about how open and multidisciplinary the group is. This prompted me to send him an email and here I am.

My project is focused on developing Organ-on-a-chip platforms with integrated sensors. My very end goal is to replace, reduce, and redefine animal experiments with these platforms.

After my stay at Ben's Lab, I will go back to Barcelona to continue with my PhD for two more years.

I enjoy spending time outside like playing beach volley and doing acroyoga in the park. I like to read a book with a nice coffee.
I also love to travel, discover new places, and meet new people.
